Cannabis Copyrights

Copyrights are a subsection of intellectual property meant to assist in protecting an individual’s original works of authorship.

While at first blush copyrights are seemingly intended exclusively for the use of artists, writers, musicians, and other creatives, they can also serve as a helpful tool for innovators and entrepreneurs in the cannabis industry. In accordance with federal law, copyrights do not have parameters on subject matter, extending an opportunity for federal intellectual property protection for cannabis-related products.

What does this mean for cannabis companies? It means that canna-companies throughout the United States are able to obtain protection over works such as those found on packaging labels, text used on company branding, phrases used on company websites, and many other forms of artwork and creative expression under federal law.
